So the sporting event of the summer…ahem…one of the sporting events of the summer kicked off today and we are very excited about it. Wimbledon is here!

There are many reasons for us to be excited about Wimbledon; not only is this a world renowned sporting event that the Brits are actually not too bad at, but the event itself is quintessentially British giving us plenty to cheer about!

So here is a little run down of just what makes Wimbledon so darn great!

Strawberries and Cream

It’s unclear where this tradition came from but I’m not sure anyone really cares! Who needs a reason to tuck into a bowl of delicious strawberries and cream? I certainly don’t! And what do you need to wash down your favourite summer time treat? Well for all those of the appropriate age, if it’s time for Wimbledon; it must be Pimms o’clock!

Ball Boys and Girls

Another of Wimbledon’s much loved traditions! Who doesn’t love the Ball Boys and Girls habitually seen at every Wimbledon tournament?! Many may say that it’s because the tradition began at Wimbledon and because these Ball Boys and Girls are the best of the best, that we love to see them so much, but we all know that really we secretly just hope to see one get hit by a ball! (Only lightly of course, we don’t wish for any Ball Boys or Girls to be hurt while at the tournament)

The Queues

What do British people love to do more than anything? That’s right we love to queue! Us Brits could queue…well we could queue for…Britain! And when Wimbledon comes around that is exactly what we do! And those of us who can’t be bothered to traipse all the way to London to join in with all the fun of the event love nothing more than to watch all the silly people wrapped in Union Jacks queuing and cheering every time they see a camera. And this is never more fun than when it is raining!

The Roof

Speaking of the rain, one thing that was always guaranteed to put a dampener on proceedings was having to wait around for hours as games were delayed due to rain! But this problem is no more, since the retractable roof was built ready for the 2009 championship. Maybe I just have simple pleasures but I think without a doubt, watching the roof close over centre court is far more exciting than listening to Cliff Richard singing!

Henmania/ Murray Mania

Finally one of the best things about Wimbledon is watching Wimbledon mania sweep the nation. Even the most respectable of people go crazy for all things tennis as they cover themselves from head to toe in Union Jacks and head to Henman Hill or Murray Mount (as it is currently known) to join in with the celebrations in the way only the British can! They cheer, they clap, they gasp and all with a Pimms and a punnet of strawberries in their hands. Now that’s what I call a good old fashioned knees up!

So let’s get excited about this fabulous event, invite your friends around (all it takes is a quick sms text) get the strawberries in and celebrate being British in a sport we don’t entirely suck at!

Will you be enjoying the delights of Wimbledon this year? Let us know below!
