mason jars

Mason jars are one of the cheapest and best storage devices you can buy today. The tightly sealable lids make them perfect for making jam and other preserves. They are perfect for storing food in the fridge if you like to avoid plastic and all its contaminants and they have an authentic vintage look.

I’ve suddenly developed a love for these mason jars after rediscovering their versatility by simply typing “mason jars” into a DIY website like Pinterest.

First, I discovered these adorable individual pie portions- IN a baby mason jar. You just line the jar with pie pastry and your favourite fillings, top it and pop the lid on. These babies can be stored in the fridge for a few days or in the freezer for much longer. When you are in the mood for pie, take off the lid and cook the pie- mason jar and all. You can then slide the pie out or eat it right out of the jar.

Next, I found this brilliant and practical idea for mason jar use. If you are lucky enough for your blender cap to fit on the top of a mason jar, you have yourself a way better version of the Magic Bullet. This will allow you to make things in smaller portions and you can even store the leftovers in the jar- no blender pitcher cleaning required. Amazing!

Then this DIY pin cushion/mini sewing kit came up in my search. A little hot glue, fabric and filling and presto- a pin cushion with a little storage space.

And this homemade hand soap dispenser is just as easy. Poke a hole big enough to fit the dispenser straw and insert securely (maybe the hot glue comes in handy again here). Fill with your favourite soap and you’ve done it.

To all you future brides with a country-chic wedding theme, check out how easy this centre piece is. A little twine or fabric, water and a floating candle? That would definitely  be within anyone’s budget.

And finally, for a more involved mason jar project, fit these classic jars as light fixtures and you’ll add a cottage-living vibe to any room.

Pick up an inexpensive mason jar or two and see what you can come up with. We’d love to see pictures of your results!
