Summer holidays mean time in the sand, sea and sunshine. While that sounds like a relaxing combination it can also mean a hair disaster. The conditions can create a perfect storm of dry hair, frizz and colour fade. However your holiday heaven doesn’t have to turn into a hair nightmare – here are some of our top tips to keep your hair looking fabulous as you hit the beach.

We all know that sun can be bad for our skin and we protect it with lotion but those UV rays can also be damaging to hair. The damage caused by the sun can be horrendous as it breaks down the proteins leaving hair brittle. Luckily there are now a wide range of products with a built-in protection factor so you can keep your natural shine.

If you don’t usually colour your hair then before a holiday is not the ideal time to start. On the other hand, if colouring is the norm for you just proceed as always but be aware of the lightening effects of the sun. You can ask your hairdresser to give you a couple of shades darker than usual to compensate.

There are also risks from swimming-pool chlorine. If you’ve gone blonde then there is a risk of your dye reacting and turning green. Although it may not look too stylish, try to keep your hair covered in the water and take a clarifying shampoo.

Frizz can be a major issue but leave the straighteners at home – you’ll only dry out your hair even more and cause long term damage. Instead embrace your natural curls but try to keep them under control. Make sure that you use plenty of conditioner and even hydrating gels when out in the sun. Salt water can leave your hair looking dry and ragged so any time you get out of the sea, make sure you rinse thoroughly with water.

When you are relaxing on holiday you don’t want a style that requires constant maintenance so keep your look simple. This season’s trend for plaits will give you an effortless style while sitting at the pool. A classic ponytail is an easy way to keep your hair smart, especially after fun in the water. If your hair is a little unruly then you can always use a smoothing balm.

As always accessories can really enhance your appearance. While the sixties styles are in you can wear a classic headscarf to protect your head from all the dangerous rays. For post-pool cocktails then hairbands are the accessory of the moment. Keep your look soft and bohemian with light colours and soft fabrics.
