This week a law change means that gay couples are free to marry in New York leading to hundreds of new couplings. While this is great news for same-sex couples it means added problems for your wardrobe with so many more ceremonies to attend. We look back at the styles from some of the top gay celebrity weddings to keep you looking fierce during the new summer of love, just in case Neil Patrick Harris grants you an invite.
Elton John and David Furnish (2005)
Perhaps the closest we’ll ever have to a gay royal family, Elton John and David Furnish wed at a small ceremony at the Guildhall, Windsor. Rather than having an extravagant and overblown ceremony, the couple wed in classic understated black dress suits. While the wedding was an intimate affair, the reception was a £1 million party with guests including Hugh Grant, Victoria Beckham and Donatella Versace so there were plenty of designer labels on show.
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi (2008)
Another intimate affair saw talk-show star Ellen marry actress de Rossi at their Beverley Hills home in front of just 19 people. Both wore Zach Posen outfits in shades of white with Portia sporting an elegant dress and Ellen opting for a classy trouser and waistcoat combination.
George Takei and Brad Altman (2008)
Sadly there was no Star Trek theme at the wedding of the former Mr Sulu – think of the amazing opportunities there could have been for colour blocking in the photographs. The grooms wore matching white tuxedos and went for a far more multi-cultural approach to the ceremony. Takei and his business manager Altman married at the Democracy Forum of the Japanese American National Museum and their procession featured bagpipes to cheer the wedding party to the reception.
Remember no matter who is involved a wedding is a celebration of love. Eyes will be on the bride or groom, so don’t go all Gaga and attempt to steal the show. Reflect the tone of the event, stay classy and make sure the happy couple are the centre of attention.
